A TALOS missile stands in front of the Missiles & More Museum.
Early rocket and guidance testing at Topsail Island paved the way for TALOS.
It evolved from a relatively short-range 10-mile beam-riding antiaircraft missile to a sophisticated 100-mile range homing rocket that could accurately guide itself to intercept and destroy other missiles.
TALOS is 28 feet long, 30 inches in diameter and powered by a 40,000 horsepower ramjet engine.
The TALOS cruiser USS Chicago was so successful in Vietnam that no MIG fighters dared fly when it was present. TALOS was in service from 1958 to 1979.
