A history of a military camp that used Topsail Island for antiaircraft artillery training during WWII.
Camp Davis was built from scratch in 1941, expanding the tiny town of Holly ridge from 28 people to a peak of 110,000 troops in 1943.
Camp Davis had a life marked by many changes: first preparing troops for war, later serving as a separation center for soldiers returning from the war to civilian life, and finally as a base of operations for a secret missile development program for our nation's defense.
